How Your Chiroprator Can Help You Stay Flexible - and Why It Matters

Flexibility is essential, pure and simple. Without proper flexibility, range of motion, strength and endurance, our chances of aging well are minimized. We should always be working to improve our movement skills to maximize performance and decrease the injury risk. Here are some of the stretches your doctor of chiropractic may suggest to help improve your flexibility:

  • Lay face up with one end of a long loop around your foot; secure the other end in your hands. Pull your leg upward, stretching your hamstrings. Hold and slowly return. Hold 10-15 seconds and slowly return. Repeat 3 to 5 times.
  • Kneel on the floor with arms outstretched and hands on a ball or the floor. Lean forward while pushing the ball forward. Lower trunk toward floor, stretching the upper back. Hold 10-15 seconds and slowly return. Repeat 3 to 5 times.
  • Stand with the leg you are stretching behind the other one. Place your arm overhead and lean away from the side you are stretching. Hold and slowly return. Don't hold your breath. Hold 10-15 seconds and slowly return. Repeat 3 to 5 times.
  • Sit in a sturdy chair. Place the ankle of the leg you want to stretch over the opposite knee in a "figure 4" position. Lean forward until you feel a stretch in your buttock. Hold 10-15 seconds and slowly return. Repeat 3 to 5 times.

So, are you flexible? Chances are you can improve. Your doctor of chiropractic can show you the right way to perform these and other great stretching manuevers to keep you flexible, fit and feeling great!
